“Managing is hard”
The quote in the title comes from Ed Catmull, writing in his outstanding book Creativity, Inc. (The Expanded Edition), about the history of Pixar (a regularly referenced resource on my must buy/read/re-read management book list.) Truer words about managing were never spoken.
No one hands you a playbook for the hardest parts of this job. Until now.
Wake-Up Calls for Managers — Insights to Sharpen Focus and Elevate Results is my latest contribution to helping anyone responsible for the work of others survive and ultimately thrive in the hardest parts of their jobs. It’s also, as the title suggests, a “wake-up call” to think differently about how you engage with your colleagues and get the results you and your organization need in this world of change.
Six big challenges for managers at all levels
From my coaching and workshop experiences over the past 17 years and my 25 years of management and executive leadership experience, there are six broad areas that most managers’ challenges fall into.
- Creating results.
- Leading change.
- Building influence.
- Managing ourselves
- Communicating for success.
- Thinking creatively and strategically.
Wake-Up Calls for Managers is a collection of my best work offering immediately actionable (research-backed/practitioner stress-tested ideas) to help in each of those areas and with the toughest, stickiest problems managers at all levels will face. No theory. Just ideas. (OK, and lots of lists of things to try!)
Yeah, managing is hard. It’s difficult on the front lines where the work happens, and we meet customers. It’s difficult in the middle, where we’re squeezed between upper management’s demands and the front lines, struggling to keep up. And it’s tough at the top, where leading change, creating innovative strategies, and navigating organizational politics define your day.
