Why Delivering Effective Feedback is a Challenge in Our Minds

There’s only two things wrong with providing successful people with feedback. They don’t want to hear it from us and we don’t want to give it to them.

It’s a human thing.

We fear negative reactions.

We are overly concerned that people won’t like us if we criticize them.

We worry that we will create a negative working environment.

We avoid it, dilute it,or (metaphorically) beat people over the head with it.

We think that people don't want to be told what they're doing wrong. Or right.

But the thing is, feedback is critical to high performance.

There are no silver bullets in leadership, but feedback comes darned close.

Used properly, this is the leader’s most powerful tool for promoting and strengthening positive behavior and for identifying and improving less than desirable behaviors.

High quality professionals…the type you want to surround yourself with, want and appreciate effective feedback.

For teams and individuals that perform at acceptable levels, feedback can help them move from good to great.

Delivering effective, constructive and positive feedback is a learned discipline.

You need to understand the building blocks of an effective feedback conversation. You need to understand how to configure these building blocks.

And then, you need to practice putting them together and conducting these conversations.

So how do you conquer the fear of feedback and cultivate your feedback skills?

Module 1: Wrapping Your Brain Around Feedback

  • Why feedback is misunderstood.
  • Wrapping your brain around what feedback means to you.

For most of us, the idea that we’re about to receive feedback puts us into defend move and keeps us from gaining the benefit of the input. In this lesson, we explore a bit of the brain science and research on feedback and offer an alternative and very positive way for you to start thinking about it.

"I loved the course but the real life feedback examples were the most beneficial. It's one thing to say what a good/bad discussion sounds like but to hear it in real time makes such a difference. I'm much more confident in delivering feedback after this course"

Will the course give me tools and approaches I can use in the workplace right away?

Absolutely! This course is designed with practical, real workplace scenarios and case studies along with ample suggestions for how to apply the tools in the workplace.
Will I be able to ask questions?

Yes! Our online community is made up of other professionals navigating similar issues as you so questions are commonplace!
Why performance feedback?

Quality feedback—both constructive and positive—is essential for high performance in the workplace. Feedback, properly delivered, reinforces those behaviors that contribute to high performance and helps individuals eliminate or change behaviors that detract from performance..

Learn to master feedback—put in the time and get over your fear of making mistakes, and you stand a chance of moving the performance needle and your career in the right direction.

Module 2: Improving as a Receiver of Feedback

  • How to prevent fight-or-flight mode (amygdala hijack) from wrecking your feedback experience.
  • Tools and approaches for strengthening as a receiver of feedback.

You cannot grow as a professional without an understanding of how you are impacting the people around you. A primary source of this input comes from feedback. Given our (and your) natural sensitivity to feedback—it’s imperative to strengthen as a receiver and processor of feedback.

Module 3: Designing a High-Quality Feedback Discussion

  • Function drives form and format—understanding the true purpose of every feedback discussion.
  • How to design a high quality feedback discussion.

Armed with a clear purpose behind your feedback—strengthening those behaviors that contribute to high-performance or eliminating or changing those that detract from high performance, it’s time to design your discussion.

Module 4: Delivering a High-Quality Feedback Discussion

  • Once you’ve designed your feedback discussion using the two key components, it’s time to deliver feedback.
  • The best approach to help you begin and guide your feedback discussion for the benefit of both parties.

Great feedback givers know they want a feedback discussion to end up with both the receiver and giver agreeing on a next step or course of action. Armed with your starting sentence and a picture of the end destination, it’s up to you to manage the muddy middle.

Module 5: Feedback Audio Examples

In this all-audio lesson, you get to listen in to several different examples of feedback in action. The high-quality feedback examples highlight the tools and approaches described in prior lessons. The poor quality feedback examples amplify how destructive poorly designed and delivered feedback can be.

Module 6: Feedback Practice Materials

Everything sounds easy when someone else is talking about it! This lesson includes the Feedback Planning Worksheet plus some sample cases for you to practice designing and delivering performance feedback. Once you understand the proper approaches to feedback, there’s only one way to develop as a feedback master: practice, practice, practice! Additionally, the Feedback Planning Worksheet is a tool you should start using immediately in the workplace as you begin planning your feedback discussions.
